Our Decisions and the Nation

Theme: Decision Making
Topic: Our Decisions and the Nation
Text: I Samuel 8: 1-20

Aim: To enable every believer know that personal and group decisions affect the
Well-being of a nation.

INTRODUCTION
Our text reveals how the decision of two young men and that of the elders of Israel led to the demand for a King. Before this time, Israel had existed as a theocratic nation. God was their maker and King. The priest or seer acted as God’s Chief Minister. He acted as intermediary between God and Israel. Samuel acted in this capacity until his sons (Joel and Abijah) became judges. The decision to walk contrary to the way of their father (Samuel) and the elders’ decision to be like other nations altered the course of history for the Israelite nation.

QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION :

1. Why were the decisions of the Israelite elders and the two sons of Samuel wrong? I Sam 8:3,5,7,19,20 (They reject God; disobeyed God; they lacked faith in God; imitation of other nations – Idolatry and worldliness)
2. What were to be the effects of these decisions? I Sam 8:11-18; 15: 23 II Chron 15:2; Isa 31:1, 2; Prov. 14:34 (servitude, oppression, rejection, economic taxation curses etc.)
3. How does the Israelite expererience help our decision making as Christians today? Ex. 23:2; Psm 1:1-4; Isa 55:7; John 10:4, 8:12; Isa 1:16 – 20 (Avoid negative influence, Don’t imitate the sinner, forsake sin – Repent)

CONCLUSION:

Israel was a chosen nation among others (I Pet. 2: 9) The children of Samuel failed to recognize this peculiarity. The elders equally failed to act within the limits of boundaries. Rather, they showed faithlessness and wanted to be like other nations,

A nation is made by the people. Hence every decision a person takes affects the national life.

There can be no better alternative or influence than God’s rulership. Allowing God to rule is allowing God to rule the nation.
Our better Nigeria tomorrow can only be nurtured under God’s rulership.

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 33:12
